Goals seem guaranteed in Sunday’s Premier League clash between Southampton and Swansea at St Mary’s Stadium.
The in-form Saints have been involved in nine games with three or more goals this season as they have risen to third in the table and the ninth-placed Swans have featured in 11 such matches.
Southampton are the fourth highest scorers in the Premier League this term with 37 goals, while Swansea occupy a mid-table position with 26, although nine of those were netted by Wilfried Bony, who has now joined Manchester City.
Graziano Pelle, Southampton’s leading scorer with eight goals, is still at St Mary’s, though, and he will be licking his lips at the prospect of facing a Swans defence who have proved particularly leaky recently.
Twice in their last four games Garry Monk’s side have conceded four or more goals – at home to Chelsea in their last league game, when they crashed 5-0, and at Liverpool on December 29, when they were trounced 4-1.
Both clubs will determined to bounce back from shock FA Cup fourth-round defeats last weekend, when they were again involved in matches of three or more goals.
After Swansea slumped 3-1 at Championship side Blackburn, where they had two players sent off, Saints succumbed 3-2 at home to Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.
However, Ronald Koeman’s team are unbeaten in the league for six matches, which have comprised five wins and a 1-1 home draw against Chelsea. Their last EPL defeat came at Burnley on December 13.
Swansea, by contrast, have yet to win in the league this year, with those heavy losses against Chelsea and Liverpool sandwiching 1-1 draws at home to West Ham and at QPR.
