Bialystok escape with draw

Jagiellonia Bialystok missed out on the chance go top of Poland’s Ekstraklasa after failing to beat lowly Slask Wroclaw.

Bialystok would have moved one point clear of Wisla Krakow if they had managed to take all three points, but instead had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

In the end, Bialystok were grateful for a point, with Tomasz Frankowski’s second-half penalty cancelling out Przemsylaw Kazmierczak’s first-half strike.

Wroclaw took a shock lead midway through the first half as Kazmierczak whipped in a superb strike shortly before the break.

The hosts – who have slipped off the top with a run of five games without a win – then drew level just after the hour mark.

Mariusz Pavelec’s challenge seemed to merit a free-kick at worst, but the officials pointed straight to the spot, despite vehement protests from the visitors.

Former Wolverhampton striker Frankowski stepped up and fired home convincingly to draw his side level.

But the title-chasers could not find a winner and have now gone six games without a victory.
