Who were the big Premier League movers of deadline day?

Italy international Dani Osvaldo has joined Italian champions Juventus on a season-long loan deal from Southampton

Italy international Dani Osvaldo has joined Italian champions Juventus on a season-long loan deal from Southampton, after less than six months at St Marys

Yesterday’s transfer deadline day was a relatively quiet day, with a lot of the Premier League’s bottom clubs strengthening their squads.

Some interesting deals took place on deadline day. Here are some of the deals that caught the eye:

Kostas Mitroglou (Fulham)

The Greek international striker joined the Cottagers from Olympiakos for a reported fee of £12million. The 25-year-old has been in outstanding form this season, scoring 17 goals in 19 appearances this season.

Mitroglou was linked with move to Fulham’s Premier League rivals Arsenal earlier in the summer, so the Cottagers signing the striker could be a real coup. The Cottagers have struggled for goals this season and the Greek international could provide much needed firepower for struggling Fulham.

Wilfried Zaha (Cardiff)

The highly-rated young England winger has joined the Bluebirds on loan for the rest of the season from Manchester United. Zaha impressed immensely at Crystal Palace in recent seasons and earned himself a summer move to Old Trafford.

However, the promising youngster has struggled for first team action with the reigning champions and has been allowed to gain first team experience at the Cardiff City Stadium. The young winger has the ability to excite fans and he may just prove his worth in the Welsh capital.

Kim Kallstrom (Arsenal)

The Swedish international midfielder was probably not the player that Gunners fans were hoping for their team to sign on deadline day. However, the 31-year-old could provide important midfield backup for Arsene Wenger’s sides, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Mathieu Flamini currently out of action.

Kallstrom offers Arsenal a wealth of experience, the Swede having appeared at World Cup’s, European Championships and has also played in the Champions League. He may not be a glamour signing, but he may prove to be a decent one for the men from north London.

Thomas Ince (Crystal Palace)

The England under-21 international had been linked with a number of top-flights clubs, including Swansea, Stoke and Sunderland. However, Ince decided on a loan move to Palace for the rest of the season.

Ince’s contract with Blackpool expires in the summer and he could use his loan spell at Selhurst Park to impress prospective suitors, with big spending French outfit Monaco appearing to be current favourites to sign the winger.

Lewis Holtby (Fulham)

The Germany international midfielder has joined the Cottagers from Tottenham on-loan for the rest of the season. The 23-year-old arrived at White Hart Lane last January for £2million from Schalke, but has failed to establish himself in north London.

However, Holtby does have talent and should gain more Premier League experience at Craven Cottage and could be a crucial player in Fulham’s fight against the drop.

Dani Osvaldo (Juventus)

The Italian international has joined the Italian giant’s on-loan from Southampton, with a view to a permanent transfer in the summer. Osvaldo was a club record summer signing for the Saints last summer, but the former-Roma striker has scored just three goals this season.

The striker has endured a controversial spell on the south coast, as he was recently suspended by the Saints for an alleged altercation with teammate Jose Fonte on the training ground. The striker is highly thought of in Italy, but his time at Southampton just has not worked out.

Kurt Zouma (Chelsea)

Chelsea completed the signing of young French defender Kurt Zouma from French club Saint Etienne for a reported fee of £12million. The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in European football.

Zouma has represented France at under-21 level and will remain with Saint Etienne until the summer. The youngster has already made 52 appearances in the French top-flight and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho seems delighted with his new signing.

Joe Ledley (Crystal Palace)

The Wales international midfielder has joined the Eagles for an undisclosed fee from Scottish champions. Ledley has impressed with the Scottish champions in the SPL and now has his chance to impress in the English Premier League.

The former-Cardiff star will give his new team a lot of energy and can also score goals. Ledley has picked up a lot of experience in the Scottish top-flight and also in the Champions League. Ledley should prove a decent signing for the Eagles.

Difference

The deals that were done yesterday could very well mean the difference between relegation to the Championship and Premier League survival for the likes of Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen and Palace’s Tony Pulis will be hoping that they have done enough in the transfer market for their clubs to survive in the top-flight.
