In what could prove to be a lively A-League showdown on Friday morning, Adelaide will welcome Sydney to Coopers Stadium.
Starting with the hosts, while Adelaide might have failed to punch a play-off ticket last season as they spent large spells scrapping it out at the foot of the table, Carl Veart’s side have come roaring back in a sensational fashion. Cementing their spot as Australia’s ultimate surprise package this time around, the Reds find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Last seen putting in another thumping performance as they stormed their way to a 4-0 romp away at Central Coast, the one-time Crystal Palace striker has seen his squad gain a string of plaudits. Opening Friday’s showdown at Coopers Stadium sat just two points adrift of climbing to the top of the A-League standings, Adelaide will be desperate to collect another heavyweight scalp here. Marking their return from November’s international break with an action-packed 3-2 victory against Brisbane, Veart’s camp are unbeaten in each of their first seven A-League appearances. It should also be noted, the Reds have notched 17 goals so far this season and they currently hold the best-attacking return among Australia’s elite.
As for the visitors, while Sydney might have opened December in the midst of their own flurry, the Sky Blues have come crashing back down to earth over the past fortnight. Eventually falling to a sensational 4-3 loss at home against Western United last time out, Ufuk Talay’s men open Friday’s showdown sat outside the play-off places. Drastically struggling to find any kind of stability since opening up the new campaign, the Australian giants have already seen their title ambitions take a major dent. Hit with a 2-1 defeat against Central Coast earlier in the month, the former Wellington boss has seen his squad suffer back-to-back A-League losses. Heading into November’s international break with a 2-1 defeat at home against Macarthur, Talay will certainly have a real headache over his side’s glaring defensive struggles. In fact, Friday’s guests have failed to muster a single clean sheet from any of their previous 12 appearances across all competitions – a run that stems back to September 19th.
