Hoping to extend their buffer in the play-off spot this weekend, Paysandu will make the trip to a struggling AE Altos for Serie C showdown on Sunday night.
Starting with the hosts, while AE Altos might have just about clung to their Serie C status last season, it is no secret that the Alligators are free-falling their way out of Brazil’s third-tier this time around. In the midst of an extended crisis, Jerson Testoni’s men sit rock-bottom of the table and three points adrift of clawing their way out of the drop zone. Signing off July with another worrying performance as they slumped to a routine 2-0 loss away at Volta Redonda, the Greens are without a win from any of their last 10 straight appearances – a run that stems all the way back to May 30th. Likewise, now drawing back-to-back Serie C blanks, Testoni will have a growing headache over his side’s continued struggles in the final third. Notching just a pair of strike from any of their previous six third-tier appearances, AE Altos should be bracing themselves for another stern examination this weekend.
As for the visitors, although Paysandu might have opened July with a brief wobble, the Wolfs have certainly proven that was nothing more than a minor blip. Now collecting 10 points from their last four Serie C appearances, Helio dos Anjos’ men have skyrocketed their way up the third-tier standings and they find themselves tipped as a standout contender to claim another play-off ticket in 2023. With their recent purple patch highlighted by a 2-1 win away at Amazonas on July 8th, the one-time Vasco boss will be calling on his promotion contenders to make another statement here. Along with losing just one of their previous four showdowns on the road, Paysandu should also be excited by a rampant record against Sunday’s opponents. Storming their way to a 3-0 victory when they last travelled to AE Altos last season, they have taken seven points from their previous three meetings. Given the recent gulf in class, we are backing an away draw no bet here.
