In what could prove to be another action-packed MLS showdown in the early hours of Thursday, Atlanta will welcome Colorado to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Starting with the hosts, putting in another nightmare display last weekend as they slumped to a worrying 3-1 drumming at home against Charlotte, Atlanta find themselves in the midst of yet another MLS struggle. Failing to punch a play-off spot last season, it appears that Gonzalo Pineda’s side are destined for another Eastern Conference struggle this time around. Crashing out of the US Open Cup on April 26th following a shock 2-1 loss against Memphis, the Five Stripes have now lost each of their last four domestic appearances. With their extended rut highlighted by a 3-1 loss at the hands of Nashville when signing off April, Atlanta have certainly gained a reputation for their continued issues at the back. It should be noted, Thursday’s hosts have failed to muster a single domestic clean sheet from any of their last eight straight attempts – a run that stems all the way back to April 1st.
As for the visitors, after watching their eye-catching flurry come to an abrupt end last weekend, Colorado will be seeking an immediate response here. Eventually suffering a lively 2-1 loss at home against Philadelphia, Robin Fraser’s men are desperate to prove that was nothing more than a minor blip. With their sights set on clinching a play-off spot in the Western Conference this season, the Rapids could be smelling the chance to spring a major upset in the early hours of Thursday. Losing just one of their last 10 straight domestic appearances across all competitions – a run that stems back to a 2-1 loss against Minnesota on March 18th – Colorado are enjoying an extended flurry in the final third. Extending on their US Open Cup adventure on Mat 9th thanks to a 4-2 victory away at Sacramento Republic, neutrals could be treated to another MLS thriller at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in midweek.
