Looking to pick up a first-leg advantage in the early hours of Thursday, Atletico-MG will welcome Flamengo to the Mineirão for the second time in the space of a few days.
Starting with the hosts, managing to make a much-needed return to winning ways over the weekend, there is no doubt that Atletico-MG will be looking to keep up that momentum here. Finding a route out of the relegation zone thanks to a 2-0 win against Flamengo on home soil, Galo should be smelling the chance to make it back-to-back victories against Mengão here. Drawing a line under their four-match winless run, Head Coach Antonio Mohamed has seen his side make some recent improvements. Likewise, managing to pick up a Serie A victory against Thursday’s guests a few days ago, Atletico-MG should be boosted by their largely impressive run on home soil. Including wins against both Avai and Atletico GO, it should be highlighted that Mohamed’s men have lost just a pair of contests in front of their own supporters since way back in May 2021.
As for the visitors, putting in a flat display at the Mineirão last weekend and getting hit with that 2-0 loss, it is fair to say that Flamengo are in the midst of a hugely worrying run of form. Despite picking up a welcomed 2-0 loss at home against Cuiaba on June 15th, it appears that was just a minor boost for the one-time Brazilian champions. Firmly battling it out at the foot of the table, the Mengão have now lost four of their last five matchups. With their recent issues highlighted by a 3-1 drumming at the hands of Internacional earlier in the month, Flamengo have also shown a string of issues at both ends of the pitch. Likewise, along with suffering a deserved defeat against Thursday’s opponents a few days ago, it should be noted that Dorival Júnior’s men have lost six of their last seven meetings with Atletico-MG.
