Looking to extend on their remarkable A-League charge, Auckland will welcome Newcastle to the Mount Smart Stadium in the early hours of Saturday.
Starting with the hosts, only making their A-League debut this season, Australia’s latest outfit have enjoyed a remarkable start to proceedings. Getting their maiden campaign underway on October 19th with an early statement as they clinched a routine 2-0 victory against Brisbane Steve Corica’s men find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Marking their return from November’s international break with another gritty display as they clinched a 1-0 win away at Macarthur, the former Sydney boss is now dreaming of the chance to mount a genuine title charge. Heading into the fortnight interval with a stellar 2-0 victory against Wellington, the Black Knights have won each of their first four A-League appearances and they are the only side the can boast a 100% start. Looking to lay down another marker this weekend, Auckland have also gained a reputation for their rugged defensive steel. In fact, Corica’s men have not shipped a single goal since making their A-League debut.
As for the visitors, spending the whole of last season scrapping it out at the foot of the A-League table, it appears that Newcastle are destined for another struggle this time around. Last seen marking their return from November’s international break with a collapse on home soil as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Central Coast, the Jets have once again shown some glaring issues this time around. Opening the new campaign with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Melbourne City on October 19th, Robert Stanton’s men have lost three of their first four A-League showdowns. Heading into November’s fortnight interval with a 4-1 drumming away at Western Sydney, Saturday’s guests should be bracing themselves for another stern examination this weekend. It should also be noted, continuing on from last season, Newcastle have recorded just a pair of A-League victories on their travels since December of last year. Given what has been a huge recent gulf in class, we are backing a home victory here.
