In what could prove to be a low-scoring showdown from St. Andrews on Tuesday night, Birmingham will welcome Huddersfield to town.
Starting with the hosts, while Birmingham might have enjoyed a shock purple patch when opening up the 2023/24 campaign, it is fair to say that the Blues have come crashing back down to earth. Showing some extended issues on either side of September’s international break, John Eustace’s side have the feel of a squad seeking a recent boost. Last seen over the weekend putting in another downbeat display as they slumped to a routine 2-0 loss at the hands of play-off hopefuls Norwich, the one-time QPR coach finds his squad in the midst of a six-match winless run across all competitions. Likewise, marking their return from the fortnight interval with another 2-0 loss against Watford, Birmingham have also gained a recent reputation for their struggles in the final third. Along with drawing back-to-back blanks, Eustace’s side have also notched just a single strike in their last four Championship showdowns. It should also be noted, Tuesday’s hosts have seen three of their previous four second-tier contests at St. Andrews finish with under 2.5 goals.
As for the visitors, while Huddersfield might have had to settle for a stalemate in each of their previous three straight Championship appearances, new boss Darren Moore should find the mood in his camp at a recent high. Simply looking to extend on their second-tier status this season, the former Sheffield Wednesday boss has received some early plaudits. Putting in a rugged performance on home soil over the weekend as they snatched a 1-1 draw against promotion contenders Ipswich, the Yorkshire-based outfit are also unbeaten in their previous five showdowns against Championship opposition. Marking their return from September’s international break with a deserved 2-0 loss against Rotherham, some in Moore’s squad could be smelling the chance to spring an upset here. However, it is worth noting, with the midweek guests seeing three of their last four Championship contests finish with under 2.5 goals, we are expecting a similar outcome at St. Andrews.
