Two Championship outfits that are looking to extend on their FA Cup adventure in midweek, Birmingham will welcome Hull to St. Andrew’s on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, although Birmingham might have parted ways with Wayne Rooney last month, the Blues do find themselves at the heart of an extended Championship crisis. Only continuing to free-fall down the table and with many around St. Andrew’s looking over their shoulder at a potential relegation scrap, new boss Tony Mowbray has a real job on his hands. While the former Blackburn boss might have seen his squad snatch a last-gasp 2-2 stalemate at home against Swansea over the weekend, Birmingham are without a single win from any of their previous seven showdowns against Championship opposition. Likewise, with just a single win to their name since a 2-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday on November 25th, the Blues have gained a reputation for their lively outcomes. In fact, including their first leg trip to the MKM Stadium last week, Mowbray’s side have seen three of their previous four contests at St. Andrew’s finish with both teams finding the net.
As for the visitors, while Hull might have continued to receive a string of praise from across the Championship this season, the Tigers are seeking a recent boost. Although Liam Rosenior’s side might have signed off 2023 with an action-packed 3-2 victory against Blackburn, that is the only win that they have recorded from their previous six appearances. Missing out on what they had billed as a potential opportunity last weekend as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at home against Norwich, Tuesday’s guests have also continued to show some extended struggles on the road. Last seen on their travels putting in a nightmare display as they slumped to a 3-1 drumming against relegation scrappers Sheffield Wednesday, Rosenior’s side have lost three of their previous four contests away from the MKM Stadium. Likewise, it should be highlighted, with Hull seeing five of their last six showdowns outside of Yorkshire finish with both teams getting on the scoresheet, we are predicting a similar outcome from St. Andrew’s here.
