In what could be an enjoyable showdown from Ashton Gate in midweek, Bristol City will welcome Sheffield Wednesday to town.
Starting with the hosts, although Bristol City might have claimed a much-welcomed 2-1 victory against Oxford United on September 21st, the Robins have once again struggled with their consistency this time around. Despite mounting a second-half comeback away at Swansea over the weekend as they snatched a 1-1 stalemate at the Liberty, Liam Manning’s men have registered just a pair of wins from any of their first eight appearances across all competitions. Slumping to respective 3-0 drumming against Derby and Blackburn on either side of September’s international break, the former MK Dons boss will also have a real headache over his side’s extended struggles at the back. While Wednesday’s hosts might have secured a remarkable 4-3 victory against Millwall on August 17th, Bristol City have failed to muster a single clean sheet since opening up the new campaign. Likewise, continuing on from last season, Manning’s men have collected just a sole clean sheet from any of their last 12 consecutive outings – a run that stems all the way back to April 10th.
As for the visitors, eventually mounting what was a sensational great escape last season as they clung to their Championship status, Sheffield Wednesday are desperately seeking a far more routine campaign this time around. Making an immediate return to winning ways over the weekend and putting in an action-packed performance as they secured a 3-2 victory against play-off contenders West Brom, Danny Rohl’s men have continued to receive plenty of plaudits from across England’s second-tier. Despite suffering a 2-1 loss away at Championship returners Luton on September 21st, that is the only defeat that Wednesday have suffered from any of their previous four appearances. While the Owls might be pencilled in as a real underdog pick at Ashton Gate, they will certainly be excited by their most recent showdown against Bristol City. Landing a 2-1 win when they welcomed the midweek hosts to Hillsborough back on February 24th, Rohl’s side will be seeking a repeat display here.
