Looking to officially extend on their Premier League status with a final weekend statement, Nottingham Forest will travel to Turf Moor in Sunday afternoon when they meet Burnley.
Starting with the hosts, suffering a collapse away at Tottenham last weekend as they suffered a 2-1 defeat in north London, Burnley’s immediate Championship return was confirmed with time left to spare. Although Vincent Kompany’s men might have enjoyed a minor boost when returning from March’s international break, the Clarets have continued to struggle with their consistency this season. Opening May with a woeful 4-1 drumming at home against Newcastle, the former Manchester City skipper has seen his side muster just a single victory from any of their previous eight Premier League appearances. With a 4-1 win against fellow Championship returners Sheffield United their only top-flight victory since the middle of March, Burnley have continued to show a string of glaring defensive issues. In fact, Kompany’s side have remarkably failed to muster a sole clean sheet from any of their last 20 consecutive matchups across all competitions – a run that stems all the way back to December 23rd.
As for the visitors, while Nottingham Forest might be limping their way over the finishing line, it would take a real miracle to stop Nuno Espirito Santo’s side from relinquishing their Premier League status. Making an immediate return to losing ways last weekend as they suffered an action-packed 3-2 loss at home against Chelsea, the former Wolves boss has seen his squad lose three of their previous four top-flight appearances. Despite opening May with a season-defining 3-1 victory away at Sheffield United, that is just the second win that Forest have collected from any of their previous 13 straight appearances across all competitions. Dealing with some public financial issues behind the scenes and already hit with a points deduction this season, Santo’s side have also collected just a single Premier League victory on their travels since opening the New Year. In what could prove to be an enjoyable showdown this weekend, we are expecting chances to come thick and fast.
