Competition: League One
Market: Both teams to score
Odds: 2/3 @ BetUS
Two sides who find themselves scrapping it out at opposite ends of the League One table, Barnsley will travel to Cambridge on Saturday afternoon.
Starting with the hosts, watching their remarkable purple patch come to an abrupt end last weekend as they fell to a 6-1 drumming at the hands of Peterborough, Cambridge are seeking an immediate response here. Although Garry Monk’s side might still find themselves at the heart of a League One relegation scrap, they do appear to have turned a recent corner over the past six weeks. Winning five of their previous six appearances across all competitions, the one-time Swansea boss will certainly be excited to make a return to the Abbey Stadium this weekend. Springing a real upset last month as they secured a 2-0 victory against Wigan, Cambridge have won all of their last three showdowns in front of their own supporters by an aggregate score of 4-0. Likewise, although Monk’s camp might open Saturday’s showdown pencilled in as an underdog, the U’s will be excited by their most recent showdown against Barnsley. Claiming a 2-0 victory when they travelled to Yorkshire back in March, Monk will be calling on a repeat performance here.
As for the visitors, although Barnsley might have suffered play-off heartbreak last season, the Tykes once again find themselves pencilled in as a leading top-six contenders. Last seen putting in another rugged display as they clinched a deserved 2-0 win at home against Rotherham, Darrell Clarke’s men are now looking to make up some ground in the automatic promotion chase. Extending on their FA Cup adventure earlier in the month as they opened November with a stellar 3-1 romp away at Port Vale, the Cheltenham boss should find the mood in his camp at a real high. Despite suffering a 3-1 loss against Doncaster while in EFL Trophy on October 29th, that is the only defeat that Saturday’s guests have tasted in any of their previous six matchups across all competitions. Making a statement last month as they clinched a 2-1 win away at Blackpool, Barnsley will be hoping to put down a similar marker here. It should also be noted, Clarke’s side stormed their way to a 4-0 romp when they travelled to Cambridge last season.
