Desperate to make up some ground in the play-off chase on Tuesday night, Watford will travel to Cardiff.
Starting with the hosts, springing an FA Cup upset away at Sheffield United last week as they snatched a shock 1-0 victory, Cardiff will be desperate to use that performance as a platform to build on. While the Bluebirds might open Tuesday’s showdown at the heart of a Championship relegation scrap, Omer Riza the do appear to have claimed somewhat of a recent boost. Last seen in Championship action claiming a gritty 1-1 stalemate away at Middlesbrough, the former Leyton Orient boss has not seen his squad suffer a single defeat from any of their previous four showdowns against second-tier opposition. Desperate to find a route out of the drop zone in midweek, Cardiff will certainly be excited by their most recent battle against Tuesday’s guests. In fact, Riza’s side signed off 2024 with an eye-catching 2-1 victory away at Vicarage Road. Enjoying their longest unbeaten run since returning from November’s international break, Cardiff could be smelling a potential opportunity here.
As for the visitors, while Watford might find themselves sat within touching distance of the play-off spots, Tom Cleverley’s men are enduring a recent struggle. Watching their respective FA Cup adventure come to an end last week as they fell to a 4-1 drumming at the hands of Premier League outfit Fulham, Tuesday’s guests have lost each of their previous four appearances across all competitions. Getting the New Year underway with a nightmare 3-1 defeat against QPR, the one-time Manchester United midfielder will have a real headache over his side’s extended defensive issues. Signing off 2024 with that 2-1 loss against Cardiff, Watford have shipped 11 goals on their four-match losing rut. Likewise, Cleverley’s downbeat squad have also won just a pair of their last nine consecutive outings across all fronts. Watching their play-off ambitions take a major dent, it should also be highlighted that the Hornets have lost all of their last three away fixtures by an aggregate score of 9-3.
