Competition: Spanish Segunda

Market: Sporting Gijon win

Odds: 19/20 @ Pribet

Hoping to extend their buffer in the play-off places, Sporting Gijon will travel to Cartagena on Monday night.

Starting with the hosts, while Cartagena might have dragged themselves over the finishing line last season as they managed to keep hold of their Segunda status, the Zebras are seeking a miracle this time around. Opening this weekend’s fixtures sat rock-bottom of the table and pencilled in as a landslide relegation contender, Sandro Castro’s men already find themselves sat eight points adrift of Segunda safety. Last seen in second-tier action falling to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Eibar, the former Villarreal coach should be bracing himself for another stern examination here. Marking their return from November’s international break with a 2-1 defeat at home against Almeria, Cartagena have now lost five of their previous six Segunda appearances. With that run stemming back to a 0-0 stalemate against Elche on October 23rd, it should be noted that Castro’s downbeat squad have recorded just a sole win from any of their last 10 consecutive second-tier showdowns.

As for the visitors, although Sporting Gijon might have suffered play-off heartbreak last season, Ruben Albes’ men are desperate to go one-step further this time around. Despite watching their Copa del Rey adventure come to an abrupt end earlier in the week, they are enjoying a real Segunda flurry. Last seen in second-tier action collecting a routine 2-0 victory against Cordoba, the former Rayo Vallecano boss will be looking for his squad to skyrocket their way into the automatic promotion places here. Making a statement last month as they claimed a 2-0 win away at Burgos, Monday’s guests have suffered just a single defeat from any of their previous seven Segunda appearances. With that run stemming all the way back to October 20th, Sporting will also be excited by their most recent showdown against Cartagena. Landing a 1-0 win when they last met the leading relegation contenders back in April, Albes’ men will be confident about producing a repeat outcome on Monday night.
