Hoping to widen their buffer in the lay-off chase on Wednesday night, Southampton will travel to the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Starting with the hosts, while Coventry might have opened the 2023/24 campaign in the midst of a public struggle, Mark Robins’ men have come roaring back in some style. Last seen over the weekend putting in another eye-catching display as they claimed a 2-0 victory at home against Birmingham, the Sky Blues have now lost just one of their previous five Championship appearances. Dragging themselves away from a looming relegation scrap, last season’s play-off finalists should also be excited by their recent defensive resolve. Marking their return from November’s international break with a stellar 3-0 romp away at Millwall, Coventry have now kept a clean sheet in four of their previous five second-tier showdowns. Likewise, including a 1-0 win against Plymouth last month, Wednesday’s hosts have not shipped a single strike in front of their own supporters in almost 300 minutes of action. On a similar note, Robins’ men have seen all of their last seven home fixtures finish with under 2.5 goals.
As for the visitors, although Southampton might have come under a huge amount of scrutiny last season as they lost their Premier League status, Russell Martin’s side are tipped as a leading play-off contender this time around. While the Saints might have suffered last-gasp heartbreak away at Watford over the weekend as they eventually had to settle for a 1-1 stalemate, the one-time Swansea boss has not seen his squad suffer a single defeat in any of their last 12 straight appearances – a run that stems all the way back to September 23rd. Opening December with a 2-0 win against Cardiff, Southampton should also be excited by an eye-catching record against Wednesday’s opponents. Along with knocking Coventry out of the FA Cup last season, Martin’s men have won all of their previous four showdowns. It should be noted, with all of Southampton’s last four appearances finishing with under 2.5 goals, a similar outcome can be found at appealing odds in midweek.
