Competition: League One
Market: Portsmouth win
Odds: 4/5 @ 888sport
Two sides who should find the mood in their camps at a polar opposite, Portsmouth will make the trip to Gresty Road on Tuesday night when they meet Crewe.
Starting with the hosts, while Crewe might have managed to sign off February with a much-needed 2-1 win away at Cheltenham, it appears that might have just been a minor boost. Putting in another downbeat display over the weekend and getting hit with a 3-1 defeat against Wycome at Gresty Road, David Artell’s men are freefalling their way out of League One. Opening the midweek fixtures sat rock-bottom of the table and still six points adrift of safety, the Railwaymen have remarkably lost eight of their last nine matchups across all formats, a run that stems back to January 15th. Knowing that they should face another stern test in Cheshire, it should also be highlighted that the leading relegation scrappers were hit with a deserved 2-0 loss when they made the trip to Fratton Park for their reverse meeting back in August.
As for the visitors, while Portsmouth might still face a real uphill battle if they’re to clinch a play-off spot this season, Danny Cowley’s men are enjoying a purple patch. Really impressing over the weekend and storming their way to a 4-0 romp against Accrington Stanley on home soil, the former Lincoln boss finds his side enjoying a six-match unbeaten run, recording five wins. Quickly gaining a reputation for their free-scoring displays in the final third, it should be noted that the Blues have bagged at least a pair of strikes in each of their previous seven matchups on the spin. Claiming that deserved 2-0 win when they welcomed a struggling Crewe to Fratton Park earlier in the season, Pompey should be smelling another golden chance. Given the huge recent gulf in class, we’re backing an away win here.
