Competition: EFL Cup

Market: Everton win

Odds: 2/5 @ BetUS

Desperately seeking a much-needed EFL Cup boost on Wednesday night, Everton will make the trip to the Eco-Power Stadium when they meet Doncaster.

Starting with the hosts, at the heart of a League Two relegation scrap last season and just about clinging to their fourth-tier status, Grant McCann’s men were hoping for some stability this time around. While the former Peterborough boss might have seen his side spring a major EFL Cup upset away at Championship outfit Hull on August 8th thanks to a 2-1 victory, it appears that might have just been a minor boost for the Rovers. Last seen over the weekend getting hit with a 2-1 defeat away at MK Dons, the Yorkshire-based outfit are yet to claim a single victory from any of their opening five League Two appearances. With their worrying start underlined by a 3-1 drumming at home against Notts County earlier in the month, McCann’s men have quickly gained a reputation for their rather glaring defensive issues. Including a 4-0 defeat against Newport on August 12th, Doncaster are rightfully tipped as a landslide underdog when they return to the Eco-Power Stadium on Wednesday night.

As for the visitors, while Everton might have just about dragged themselves over the finish line last season as they clung to their Premier League status, Sean Dyche’s men are firmly at the heart of another crisis. Dealing with a string of issues both on and off the pitch, the former Burnley boss also finds mount pressure on his shoulders after a nightmare start to the 2023/24 campaign. Last seen over the weekend missing out on what was billed as a golden opportunity as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at home against Wolves, the Blues have lost each of their opening three Premier League appearances. With that early rut underlined by a 4-0 drumming away at Aston Villa on August 20th, it should also be noted that Dyche’s downbeat squad are yet to muster a single top-flight strike so far. However, while Everton might find themselves at the heart of yet another public struggle, we are backing Everton to claim a crucial EFL Cup boost on Wednesday night.
