Looking to extend on their recent Segunda flurry and make a real statement on Friday night, Eibar will make the trip to a struggling Espanyol.

Starting with the hosts, after losing their La Liga status last season, it is no secret that Espanyol have an immediate top-flight return at the top of their agenda this time around. However, while Luis Garcia’s men might have come flying out of the traps when opening up the 2023/24 campaign, the Parakeets have come crashing back down to earth in a worrying fashion. Putting in another toothless display last weekend as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Sporting Gijon, the Catalonia-based outfit have come tumbling away from the automatic promotion places. In fact, with their recent struggles highlighted by a 3-1 drumming away at Villarreal B last month, Espanyol have now lost three of their previous four Segunda appearances. With the feel of a squad seeking a much-needed boost on Friday night, Garcia’s downbeat squad should also be worried by their most recent battle at the Stage Front Stadium. Last seen in front of their own supporters getting hit with a 1-0 defeat against Espanyol on October 20th, the Blanquiazules should be bracing themselves for another stern challenge here.

As for the visitors, while Eibar might have suffered play-off heartbreak last season, Joseba Etxeberria’s men certainly haven’t shown any signs of a hangover since opening up the 2023/24 campaign. Last seen over the weekend making a major statement of intent as they cruised their way to a 5-1 romp at home against Valladolid, it is no secret that the Gipuzkoa-based outfit are tipped as a leading promotion contender this time around. Skyrocketing up the Segunda standings and finding a route into the top-two, Etxeberria’s high-flying squad have also collected 22 points from just their last eight second-tier appearances. With their remarkable unbeaten run stemming all the way back to September 9th, Eibar will also be hugely excited by their most recent showdown against Espanyol. Landing a 2-0 victory when they last travelled to Catalonia for a La Liga showdown back in July 2020, Los Armeros should be smelling the chance to spring an upset here. Given the huge recent gulf in class, we are expecting an away double chance this weekend.
