In what is a monumental relegation six-pointer this weekend, Everton will welcome Burnley to Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.
Starting with the hosts, while Everton might open this weekend’s fixtures holding a four-point buffer over dropping into the relegation zone, the Blues are in the midst of a public Premier League nightmare. With continued speculation that more sanctions could be placed on them, Sean Dyche also has a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders at Goodison Park. Although Everton might have snatched a last-gasp 1-1 stalemate away at Newcastle earlier in the week, they have remarkably failed to win any of their previous 13 straight Premier League appearances – a rut that stems all the way back to a 2-0 victory against Burnley on December 16th. Marking their return from March’s international break with a worrying 2-1 defeat away at Bournemouth, the Toffees have also shown some extended issues on home soil. Last seen at Goodison Park getting hit with a 3-1 loss at the hands of West Ham, Dyche’s men have won just one of their previous eight showdowns in the blue half of Merseyside.
As for the visitors, although Burnley might still find themselves pencilled in as a leading relegation contender this season, Vincent Kompany’s men have turned a mild corner on either side of March’s international break. Heading into the fortnight interval with a 2-1 victory against Brentford, the Clarets are unbeaten in all of their previous four Premier League appearances. Marking their return from the fortnight interval with an action-packed 2-2 stalemate away at Chelsea, Burnley will be more than aware that they face a real must-win battle this weekend. Opening Saturday’s trip to Goodison Park sat six points adrift of top-flight safety, Kompany’s side could be smelling a potential opportunity here. Despite continuing to show some extended defensive issues, the Lancashire-based outfit will be confident of testing a leaky Everton defence. It should be noted, with Burnley seeing their previous four Premier League showdowns finish with both teams finding the net, we are expecting a similar outcome.
