Looking to extend on their rampant run of form this weekend, Genoa will welcome Reggina to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Friday night.
Starting with the hosts, although Genoa might have lost their Serie A status last season, it appears that the Griffins are breezing their way towards an immediate top-flight return in 2023. Only continuing on a stellar purple patch since opening the New Year, Alberto Gilardino’s men open this weekend’s fixtures holding a five-point buffer from slipping out of the automatic promotion places. Last seen putting in another rampant display as they claimed a 3-0 victory away at Brescia before heading into the international break, Genoa have now won each of their last three Serie B showdowns by an aggregate score of 8-0. Likewise, collecting 17 points from just their last seven second-tier appearances, Gilardino’s high-flying squad have also gained a reputation for their free-scoring displays in the final third. Including a 4-0 romp against Cosenza on March 6th, the Liguria-based outfit will be looking to make another promotion statement here.
As for the visitors, while Genoa might be in the midst of a stellar purple patch, the same cannot be said for a Reggina squad who are enduring a major Serie B struggle. Last seen putting in a nightmare display as they slumped to a 4-0 drumming at home against Cagliari, Filippo Inzaghi’s men have come tumbling down the second-tier standings. Showing a string of glaring issues since opening 2023, Gil Amaranto have lost each of their last three Serie B appearances by an aggregate score of 7-1. Likewise, on what has been a nightmare run of form, the former Brescia boss has seen his side lose seven of their previous eight contests – a run that stems all the way back to January 21st. Holding just a one point buffer from slipping out of the play-off places, Reggina will be more than aware that they face a huge challenge on Friday night.
