Looking to make it four victories on the spin this weekend, a high-flying Oakleigh will travel to Hume City on Saturday morning for an NPL Victoria showdown.
Starting with the hosts, while Hume might have just about clung to their NPL Victoria status last season, Ersan Gulum’s men find themselves in the midst of yet another extended rut. Needing a miracle in their bid to claim a top-half finish in 2023, the Anadolu have now lost each of their last four straight appearances by an aggregate score of 7-1. Putting in another nightmare performance last weekend as they suffered a 2-1 loss at home against North Geelong, the one-time Besiktas defender will know that his downbeat squad face another real challenge in Broadmeadows. Likewise, with their extended rut highlighted by a routine 3-0 drumming at the hands of St. Albans on June 10th, Hume have also collected just a trio of points from any of their previous seven NPL Victoria outings – a run that stems all the way back to a 1-1 draw away at the Melbourne Knights on April 29th.
As for the visitors, putting in another eye-catching performance last week as they claimed a routine 2-0 win at home against St. Albans, Oakleigh have continued on another NPL Victoria romp in 2023. Battling it out at the top of the table and cruising their way to yet another top-six finish, the Cannons will be looking to make another statement on Saturday morning. In fact, along with clinching a stellar 5-1 romp at home against Heidelberg earlier in the month, Chris Taylor’s men have remarkably mustered 19 points from their last seven appearances – a run that stems all the way back to April 28th. Gaining a real reputation for their free-scoring displays in the final third, it should also be noted that Oakleigh have bagged 21 strikes on that seven-match flurry. Given the huge recent gulf in class between Saturday’s opponents, we are backing an away victory this weekend.
