Knowing that they can officially punch their play-off ticket on Friday morning, Melbourne Victory will travel to the Campbelltown Stadium when they meet Macarthur.
Starting with the hosts, eventually forced to settle for an action-packed 2-2 stalemate away at Central Coast last weekend, Macarthur find their play-off dreams hanging by a thread. Getting this weekend’s fixtures underway sat four points adrift of breaking into the top-six and with just a pair of A-League appearances remaining this season, the Bulls have failed to find much recent stability. Despite getting April underway with a stellar 5-1 romp away at Brisbane, Mile Sterjovski’s side have registered just a pair of wins from any of their previous nine appearances – a run that stems back to January 25th. Heading into March’s international break with a remarkable 5-4 win against Adelaide, Macarthur have gained a reputation for their lively outcomes at both ends of the pitch. Including a dramatic 3-3 stalemate against Newcastle on March 28th, Friday’s hosts have seen their last four A-League showdowns produce a staggering 25 goals at both ends.
As for the visitors, while Melbourne might be sat firmly in the driving seat to book another play-off ticket this season, the Victory are seeking an immediate response. Nevertheless, despite falling to a 2-0 loss at home against Auckland last weekend, that is just the second defeat that Arthur Diles’ side have suffered from any of their previous eight A-League appearances. Marking their return from March’s international break with a frantic 5-3 victory against Adelaide, the former Western Sydney coach will be calling on his squad to find some recent defensive steel. Heading into the fortnight interval with a dramatic 4-2 loss against the Wanderers, Melbourne have put just a single clean sheet on the board since the middle of February. Likewise, Friday’s guests have conceded at least a pair of strikes in each of their previous four straight A-League showdowns. It should also be noted, Diles’ camp have notched just a sole clean sheet on their travels since New Year’s Day.
