Hoping to widen their buffer at the top of the NPL Victoria table on Friday morning, Avondale will travel to a struggling Melbourne Knights this weekend.
Starting with the hosts, although Melbourne Knights might have enjoyed a real May flurry, Ben Cahn’s men have largely come crashing back down to earth over the past month. Last seen putting in another downbeat display as they slumped to an action-packed 3-2 loss away at Altona Magic, the Reds have now claimed just a single win from any of their last five NPL Victoria appearances – a run that stems back to May 19th. Falling away from any kind of title scrap this season, the Knights should also be worried by their recent leaky performances at the back. Including a 2-1 loss at the hands of South Melbourne earlier in the month, Friday’s hosts have managed to muster just a sole clean sheet from any of their previous six attempts. Likewise, suffering back-to-back defeats in Sunshine North, Cahn’s squad should be bracing themselves for a stern examination here.
As for the visitors, last seen putting in another rampant display as they stormed their way to a 4-0 romp away at Green Gully on June 23rd, Avondale are in the midst of what has become a remarkable run of form. Skyrocketing their way to the top of the NPL Victoria table and holding a three-point buffer over the chasing pack, the Avengers have won each of their last seven straight appearances – a run that stems all the way back to May 7th. Likewise, on a history-making romp, it should also be noted that the Blues have collected a staggering 52 points from just their 19 contests so far this season. Gaining a fearsome reputation for their free-scoring displays in the final third, Zoran Markovski’s high-flying squad will certainly be looking to lay down another title marker here. Picking up a routine 3-0 victory when they welcomed the Kings to Avenger Park for their reverse meeting on April 1st, we are expecting a similar outcome on Friday morning.
