Two sides who are seeking a crucial Championship boost on Saturday afternoon, Millwall will welcome Preston to the Den.
Starting with the hosts, while Millwall might have opened up the 2023/24 campaign with their sights set on mounting another play-off charge, the Lions have struggled to find any kind of stability. Still battling it out in the bottom-half of the Championship standings and almost in second-tier limbo, Joe Edwards’ men have also lost all of their last three straight appearances across all competitions. Last seen putting in a nightmare display as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of leading relegation contenders QPR, the one-time Chelsea coach will also have a real headache over his side’s continued issues on home soil. Including a 3-1 drumming against Middlesbrough on January 13th, Millwall have won just a pair of their previous 11 straight showdowns in south London – a run that stems all the way back to a 3-0 romp against Rotherham on September 20th. Likewise, shipping eight strikes on their three-match losing run, Edwards’ side face what is a crucial affair this weekend.
As for the visitors, while Preston might have come flying out of the traps when opening up the 2023/24 campaign, Ryan Lowe’s side have come crashing back down to earth. Last seen getting hit with a 2-1 loss away at play-off contenders Leeds, the Lilywhites have come tumbling down the Championship standings and they have the feel of a squad seeking a crucial boost. Crashing out of the FA Cup earlier in the month as they slumped to a 4-0 drumming at the hands of Premier League giants Chelsea, the Lancashire-based have lost six of their previous eight appearances across all competitions. Opening the New Year with a routine 2-0 defeat against Swansea, Preston have also continued to show some glaring issues on the road. In fact, Lowe’s men have lost all of their last four straight contests away from Deepdale by an aggregate score of 10-2. Likewise, with Saturday’s guests seeing seven of their previous eight away fixtures finish with over 1.5 goals, we are expecting a similar outcome here.
