Two sides who are seeking a crucial A-League boost on Tuesday morning, Newcastle will welcome Brisbane to the McDonald Jones Stadium.
Starting with the hosts, while Newcastle might have signed off 2023 with a much-welcomed 2-0 victory against Western United, it appears that might have just been a minor boost for Robert Stanton’s side. Last seen over the weekend putting in a nightmare display as they slumped to a 4-0 drumming at the hands of Sydney, the Jets have recorded just a single win from any of their previous six straight A-League showdowns – a run that stems back to a 3-0 romp against Wellington on December 9th. Shipping seven goals in their back-to-back A-League appearances, the one-time Sydney coach will have a mounting headache over his side’s continued defensive issues. Including a 3-1 defeat against Adelaide last month, Tuesday’s hosts have recorded just a pair of clean sheets across all competitions since the stay of November. Crashing out of the Australia Cup back on August 14th as they eventually slumped to an action-packed 3-2 defeat at home against Brisbane, Newcastle are desperate to claim some crucial stability.
As for the visitors, although some in Brisbane’s camp might have been dreaming of the chance to mount a top-half charge this season, the Roar are in the midst of an A-League crisis. Making an immediate return to losing ways over the weekend as they slumped to a 3-1 loss at home against Macarthur, Ben Cahn’s side have lost five of their last six appearances and they have come under some mounting scrutiny. Signing off 2023 with an infamous display away at Melbourne City as they were hit with an embarrassing 8-1 drumming, the Queensland-based outfit have also lost back-to-back showdowns away from Lang Park by an aggregate score of 10-2. However, despite being in an almost identical position to Tuesday’s hosts, Brisbane will take some solace from their stellar recent record against Newcastle. Landing an action-packed 3-2 victory when they welcomed the Roar to town on January 14th, Cahn’s struggling squad have won all of their last three meetings.
