Two sides who find themselves scrapping it out at the foot of the A-League table, Newcastle will welcome Perth to the McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday morning.
Starting with the hosts, while some in Newcastle’s camp might have opened up the new campaign dreaming of the chance to mount a genuine play-off charge, the Jets have once again failed to find any kind of stability. Last seen putting in another worrying performance as they slumped to a 3-1 loss at the hands of Western United, Robert Stanton’s men have won just a trio of their 12 A-League appearances so far this season. Falling to another 3-1 defeat against Macarthur on January 12th, the former Sydney coach will have a mounting headache over his side’s defensive struggles. Signing off 2024 with a 2-1 loss away at Wellington, Newcastle have now shipped at least a pair of goals in four of their last five A-League showdowns. However, despite failing to collect back-to-back victories over the past nine months, the Jets will be excited by their most recent meetings against Saturday’s guests. Storming their way to a 4-0 romp when they travelled to HBF Park on December 14th, Stanton will be desperate for a repeat display here.
As for the visitors, getting the new campaign underway with a nightmare 6-1 drumming away at Macarthur on October 20th, Perth have only continued on another public crisis this season. Stuck with Australia’s wooden spoon last season after finishing rock-bottom of the table, David Zdrillic’s side have simply carried on from where they left off prior to the summer break. Making an immediate return to losing ways last time out as they slumped to a 2-1 defeat at home against Western Sydney, the Glory have now lost four of their previous five A-League appearances. Getting the New Year underway with an action-packed 3-2 defeat against Western United, Perth have only put eight points on the board from any of their first 14 A-League showdowns. Hit with that woeful 4-0 loss when they welcomed Newcastle to HBF Park last month, it should be highlighted that Saturday’s guests have already conceded 35 goals so far this season.
