in an A-League showdown that could prove to be another lively affair on Friday morning, Newcastle Jets will host Sydney when this weekend’s fixtures open up.
Starting with the hosts, managing to make what was a thumping return to winning ways last weekend, there is no doubt that Newcastle will be desperate to build off of that display. Eventually storming their way to a thumping 4-0 win against Wellington on home soil, Arthur Papas’ side now have their sights set on breaking into the top-six. Hoping to fully draw a line under their four-match losing run from earlier in the month, the Jets will be calling on Olivier Boumal to spearhead their charge on Friday morning. Now scoring three goals in as many A-League appearances, Papas has made it clear that his squad must find some stability at the back. After claiming that thrilling 4-0 victory against Wellington last weekend, that is just the second clean sheet that Newcastle have recorded since the start of December.
As for the visitors, while Sydney might have endured some inconsistencies this season, they are in the midst of a March purple patch. Last seen storming their way to a thumping 3-0 win against Western United on home soil, Steve Corica’s men have won each of their last three matchups across all formats. With their recent resurge highlighted by a 5-0 romp against Kaya while on AFC Champions League duties earlier in the month, the Blues could be smelling the chance to lay down another marker here. However, while a victory on Friday morning could move them within touching distance of the top-two, they do hold a rather sluggish record against Newcastle. Having to settle for what was an action-packed 2-2 draw when the two sides faced off back on December 4th, they have won just one of their last four contests against the Jets.
