Competition: A-League
Market: Both teams to score
Odds: 4/7 @ Pribet
In what could prove to be another enjoyable A-League showdown on Sunday morning, Newcastle will welcome Wellington to the McDonald Jones Stadium.
Starting with the hosts, while Newcastle might be seeking a real miracle in the play-off chase, Robert Stanton’s men are signing off the 2024/25 campaign with a real flurry. Skyrocketing their way up the A-League standings and receiving plenty of plaudits from across Australia’s elite, the Jets have suffered just a single defeat from any of their previous nine appearances. With that run stemming back to a 3-1 loss against Western United on January 17th, Newcastle have gained a reputation for their lively outcomes. Last seen marking their return from March’s international break with an action-packed 3-3 stalemate away at Macarthur, Stanton’s camp have notched at least a pair of goals in seven of their last nine outings. However, despite their recent free-scoring performances in the final third, Sunday’s hosts are seeking some kind of defensive stability. Heading into the fortnight interval with what was a 6-2 drumming at home against Western United, the Jets have conceded nine goals in their back-to-back appearances. Likewise, Newcastle have registered just a single clean sheet over the past two months.
As for the visitors, although Wellington might have snatched a silver medal finish last season, Giancarlo Italiano’s men have come crashing back down to earth in a worrying fashion this time around. Marking their return from March’s international break with a 2-2 stalemate at home against Western Sydney, the Phoenix have collected just two points from any of their previous six A-League appearances. Likewise, Sunday’s guests have claimed just a single victory from their 12 showdowns so far this calendar year. Getting March underway with a 4-1 defeat against Western United, Italiano’s side have also shown their own extended defensive struggles. Coming under a huge amount of scrutiny on February 22nd as they slumped to a 6-1 drumming against runaway leaders Auckland, Wellington have conceded 14 goals in just their last five outings. It should also be noted, the Phoenix have failed to muster a sole clean sheet from any of their previous eight A-League contests away from the Sky Stadium – a run that stems all the way back to November 10th.
