Looking to find a route into the Europa League’s top-eight on Thursday evening, Olympiacos will welcome Twente to the Karaiskakis Stadium.
Starting with the hosts, making real history back in May as they were crowned Europa Conference League champions, Olympiacos have certainly used that famous night as a platform to build on. Although some in Jose Mendilibar’s camp might have been frustrated last season as they had to settle for a bronze medal finish among Greece’s elite, the former Sevilla boss finds his squad leading the chase this time around. Receiving a string of plaudits and with the mood in their camp at a continued high, Olympiacos will be confident of making a statement here. Last seen over the weekend extending on their charge as they stormed their way to a routine 3-0 victory against Volos, Mendilibar’s side are unbeaten in each of their previous nine appearances across all competitions. Pencilled in as a standout contender on Thursday evening, the Greek giants will be excited by their extended success on home soil. Including a thumping 4-1 win against domestic rivals AEK last month, Olympiacos have not suffered a single defeat at the Karaiskakis Stadium so far this season.
As for the visitors, while Twente might have gained plenty of domestic plaudits last season as they claimed a bronze medal finish, the Reds are seeking some much-needed stability this time around. Putting in what was a woeful performance last weekend as they clumped to a 6-1 drumming at the hands of PSV, Joseph Oosting’s men have recorded just a pair of wins from any of their previous six appearances across all competitions. Last seen in Europa League action falling to a 1-0 defeat at home against Royale Union, Thursday’s guests have also gained a reputation for their issues at the back. Along with failing to muster a single clean sheet over the past six weekend, Twente have also conceded 14 goals in their previous six outings. Likewise, it should also be noted that Oosting’s side have recorded just a single clean sheet on their travels since the middle of September. Collecting just three points from any of their five Europa League showdowns so far this season, the Enschede-based outfit should be bracing themselves for another tricky challenge on Thursday evening.
