Competition: Championship
Market: Plymouth win
Odds: 11/10 @ Pribet
Two sides who find themselves battling it out at the foot of the Championship table, Plymouth will welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Home Park in midweek.
Starting with the hosts, gaining a string of plaudits last season as they cruised their way to a Championship return, Plymouth certainly opened up the 2023/24 campaign confident of laying down another statement of intent. However, although Steven Schumacher’s side might have sprung a major upset last month as they claimed a 6-2 romp against play-off hopefuls Norwich, the Pilgrims have largely failed to build on that famous performance. Claiming just a single win from any of their previous seven showdowns against Championship opposition, Plymouth will be desperate to pounce on a golden opportunity at Home Park. Knowing that they can really skyrocket themselves away from a potential relegation scrap here, Schumacher’s men will be excited by a remarkable record against Wednesday’s opponents in Devon. In fact, along with claiming a 2-1 victory when they last welcomed the Owls to Home Park 13 months ago, Plymouth have won each of their last four meetings in front of their own supporters by an aggregate score of 11-3.
As for the visitors, although Sheffield Wednesday might have followed Plymouth out of League One last season, it is no secret that new boss Danny Rohl has a major struggle on his hands. In the midst of what has become a public nightmare and dealing with a string of issues both on and off the pitch, the Owls already sit rock-bottom of the Championship table and tipped as a landslide contender to be hit with an immediate third-tier return. Last seen over the weekend putting in another toothless display as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Watford, Wednesday are also yet to muster a single Championship victory since opening up the 2023/24 campaign. Likewise, putting in just three points out the board from any of their opening 12 Championship appearances, it should also be noted that the midweek guests have not notched a single strike in over 500 minutes of action. Holding a woeful record at Home Park and potentially facing another tricky test, we are backing a home victory in Devon.
