Competition: EFL Cup

Market: Port Vale win

Odds: 3/4 @ 1xBet

Two sides who will turn their attention back to EFL Cup duties on Tuesday night, Port Vale will welcome Sutton to Burslem in midweek.

Starting with the hosts, putting in a gritty performance on their travels over the weekend as they claimed a 1-1 draw away at play-off hopefuls Cambridge, Port Vale should find the mood in their camp at a continued high. While Andy Crosby’s side might have spent large spells of last season looking over their shoulder at a looming relegation scrap, the Valiants have made a string of improvements since opening up the 2023/24 campaign. Extending on their EFL Cup adventure last month as they edged past Crewe, the Burslem-based outfit find themselves battling it out at the top of the League One standings. Opening September with an eye-catching 2-1 win away at Oxford, the one-time Northern Ireland coach has seen his squad suffer just a single defeat from any of their previous 11 appearances across all competitions – a run that stems all the way back to August 5th. Likewise, picking up a routine 2-0 victory when they last welcomed Sutton to Vale Park 18 months ago, Crosby’s men will be seeking a repeat performance here.

As for the visitors, while Sutton might have cruised their way to League Two safety last season, the Yellows have struggled to find any kind of stability this time around. Currently sat rock-bottom of the fourth-tier standings and appearing that they will face an uphill struggle, Matt Gray’s side have managed to muster just a single win from any of their last 10 matchups across all competitions – a run that stems back to August 8th. Getting their EFL Trophy adventure underway last week as they suffered a penalties defeat at home against Aston Villa’s U21s, the Londoners have quickly gained a reputation for their extended defensive struggles. Hit with a 4-1 drumming at the hands of Accrington Stanley earlier in the month, Sutton have also lost eight of their previous 10 showdowns. Hit with that 2-0 defeat when they travelled to Vale Park for a League Two battle 18 months ago, we are expecting a similar outcome in midweek.
