Competition: Primera Liga

Market: Sporting Lisbon win

Odds: 4/11 @ BetUS

Looking to open the New Year with another title statement, Sporting Lisbon will travel to the Estadio Municipal when they meet Portimonense on Saturday night.

Starting with the hosts, while Portimonense might have eventually clung to their Primeira Liga status last season, Paulo Sergio’s men are enduring another top-flight struggle this time around. Last seen putting in a nightmare performance as they slumped to an action-packed 5-2 drumming against Moreirense, the Alvinegros have shown a string of issues since returning from November’s international break. Crashing out of the Taca de Portugal last month as they fell to a 4-1 loss at home against Braga, Saturday’s hosts have claimed just a single win from their previous six appearances across all competitions. With many in their camp now looking over their shoulder at a looming relegation scrap, Portimonense hold just a three-point buffer from slipping into the drop zone. Likewise, winning just a pair of their last seven showdowns at the Estadio Municipal – a run that stems back to July 23rd, Sergio’s side will be bracing themselves for a heavyweight challenge here.

As for the visitors, opening Christmas Day holding a one-point buffer at the top of the Primera Liga standings, Sporting Lisbon find themselves tipped as a standout contender to recapture their domestic crown in 2024. Last seen extending on their League Cup adventure thanks to a 2-1 victory away at Tondela, Ruben Amorim’s side have won all of their previous three domestic appearances by an aggregate score of 7-1. Likewise, losing just one of their last seven contests across all fronts and punching a Europa League knockout stage ticket earlier in the month, the Lions should find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Smelling the chance to make a statement on Saturday night, Sporting will also be excited by a stellar record against the relegation scrappers. In fact, Amorim’s men have lost just one of their previous 14 straight showdowns against Portimonense. Two sides battling it out at opposite ends of the Primera Liga table, we are backing an away victory here.
