Competition: EFL Trophy
Market: Portsmouth win
Odds: 8/15 @ Pribet
Looking to extend on their stellar purple patch when they turn their attention back to EFL Trophy duties, Portsmouth will welcome Gillingham to Fratton Park on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Portsmouth might have eventually missed out on the chance to claim a League One play-off ticket last season, the Blues have certainly come flying out of the traps this time around. With many feeling that John Mousinho’s side are tipped as a genuine promotion contender this year, Pompey should find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Last seen over the weekend putting in another eye-catching performance as they claimed a 2-0 victory at home against Port Vale, the midweek hosts have won each of their previous six appearances across all competitions. Signing off September with an impressive 2-1 win away at Wigan, Portsmouth have also impressed with their free-scoring displays in the final third. Including an action-packed 3-2 victory against Barnsley on September 19th, Mousinho’s men have notched 11 strikes on their five-match winning flurry. Likewise, winning all of their last four showdowns at Fratton Park, Portsmouth are rightfully tipped as a standout pick here.
As for the visitors, drawing a line under their three-match losing run over the weekend as they snatched a 2-1 victory at home against MK Dons, Gillingham will be desperate to use that performance as a platform to build on. However, although caretaker boss Keith Millen might still find his temporary squad battling it out at the top of the League Two table, the Kent-based outfit will be concerned by a nightmare record while away from Priestfield. Last seen on their travels getting hit with a routine 2-0 defeat at the hands of Crewe, Gillingham have quickly gained a reputation for their extended issues on the road. Including another 2-0 loss against Grimsby on September 2nd, Tuesday’s guests have lost each of their previous four away fixtures by an aggregate score of 9-3. Hit with a 3-1 drumming when they last travelled to Fratton Park 18 months ago, it should also be highlighted that Gillingham have lost each of their last three showdowns against Portsmouth by an aggregate score 6-2.
