Looking to extend on their recent purple patch, Atletico Madrid will travel to the Estadio Jose Zorrilla when they meet Real Valladolid on Saturday night.
Starting with the hosts, while Real Valladolid might have only made their La Liga return this season, the Pucelle have a real battle on their hands in the race to keep hold of their top-flight status. Marking their return from November’s international break with another downbeat display as they slumped to a 2-0 loss away at Getafe, Paulo Pezzolano’s men are pencilled in as a landslide relegation contender. Sat at the rock-bottom of the La Liga table and with little too cheer about, the Cruzeiro boss has seen his squad pick up just nine points from any of their first 14 La Liga appearances so far this year. Opening November with a 1-0 defeat against Osasuna, Saturday’s hosts have also claimed just a sole top-flight victory since way back on August 19th. Likewise, finding the net on just one occasion over the past month, Valladolid will also be concerned by a nightmare record against Atletico. Including a 5-2 drumming when they last met back in April 2023, they have lost all of their previous five meetings by an aggregate score of 13-3.
As for the visitors, while Atletico Madrid might have signed off October in the midst of a real wobble, Diego Simeone’s men have come roaring back in a sensational fashion. Laying down a major Champions League marker earlier in the week as they stormed their way to a 6-0 romp away at Sparta Prague, it appears that the mood in their camp is at a real high. Now with their sights set on making up some ground in the title charge, the Colchoneros have now won each of their previous six appearances across all competitions. Collecting a heavyweight scalp earlier in the month as they opened November with a 2-1 win away at French giants PSG, Atletico are enjoying their brightest run of the campaign. Conceding just a pair of goals on their six-match winning run, Atletico will certainly be smelling a golden opportunity this weekend. Winning their previous three La Liga showdowns on either side of the fortnight break by an aggregate score of 5-1, Simeone’s men are rightfully installed as a standout contender here.
