Competition: Serie A

Market: Sampdoria win

Odds: 20/21 @ 888sport

Smelling a real chance when they return from Italy’s festive break on Thursday morning, Sampdoria will host relegation scrappers Cagliari.

Starting with the hosts, managing to enter the festive break with what was a gritty 1-1 draw away at Roma, Sampdoria will be hoping to build off of those positives here. Enjoying a four-match Serie A unbeaten run when heading into the New Year, the Blucerchiati have also skyrocketed their way away from any potential relegation scrap. Opening Thursday’s meeting at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris holding a commanding nine-point buffer over the bottom-three, Head Coach Roberto D’Aversa should be smelling a golden chance in midweek. With their sights set on trying to make a charge for the top-half in 2022, Sampdoria also have one attacking talisman enjoying a stellar free-scoring run. Once again finding the net away at the Stadio Olimpico last time out, former Southampton striker Manolo Gabbiadini has bagged five goals in just his last six outings.

As for the visitors, while Sampdoria might open 2022 looking up the Serie A table, Cagliari find themselves in a real scrap to maintain their top-flight status this year. Last seen heading into the festive break with a deserved 2-0 defeat away at former champions Juventus, Walter Mazzarri finds growing pressure on his spot in the Unipol Domus dugout. Marking their return to action sat way down in 19th and six points adrift of safety, the one-time Watford boss finds his side in the midst of an 11-match Serie A winless run. Only showing a host of issues in the final third, Cagliari know that they should face a stern test on Thursday morning. Remarkably yet to pick up a single victory on their travels so far this season and without an away goal since the middle of September, we’re backing a home win here.

Bet: Sampdoria 20/21 to beat Cagliari in Thursday’s Serie A battle @ 888sport
