Competition: MLS
Market: Portland Timbers double chance
Odds: 19/20 @ Pribet
Looking to drag themselves into the play-off places, Portland will travel to PayPal Park in the early hours of Thursday when they meet San Jose.
Starting with the hosts, last seen over the weekend putting in another nightmare performance as they eventually fell to a 4-2 defeat at home against Cincinnati, San Jose find themselves at the heart of an MLS crisis. Sat rock-bottom of the Western Conference table and coming under a huge amount of scrutiny since opening up the 2024 campaign, the Goonies have also broken a string of unwanted records. Crashing out of the US Open Cup on May 22nd following an infamous 4-3 loss at the hands of USL outfit Sacramento Republic, Luchi Gonzalez’s men have also collected just a single point from any of their last five MLS appearances. Opening June with a 5-1 drumming against New York City, the former Dallas boss will have a major headache over his side’s glaring defensive struggles. Along with conceding nine goals in their back-to-back MLS defeats, it should also be highlighted that San Jose have remarkably shipped 19 goals in just their previous six outings.
As for the visitors, while Portland might have only collected a pair of wins from any of their first 12 MLS appearances when opening up the 2024 campaign, the Greens do appear to have found some recent stability. Putting in a gritty performance last weekend as they clinched a 0-0 stalemate away at St. Louis City, Phil Neville’s men have suffered just a single defeat from any of their previous six outings. Signing off May with a 2-0 victory away at Austin, the former Inter Miami boss should be relishing a trip to San Jose in the early hours of Thursday. Enjoying their most fruitful spell since getting the new campaign underway, Portland will also be excited by their most recent meetings against the Earthquakes. Storming their way to a thumping 4-2 win when they welcomed the midweek hosts to Providence Park on May 16th, Neville will be calling on a repeat performance here. It should also be noted, Portland have lost just one of their last five visits to PayPal Park.
