Competition: Championship
Market: Ipswich double chance
Odds: 7/11 @ BetUS
Looking to lay down another Championship marker on Tuesday night, Ipswich will travel to St. Mary’s when they meet a struggling Southampton.
Starting with the hosts, losing their Premier League status with a real whimper last season, it is no secret that Southampton have their sights set on securing an immediate top-flight return this time around. However, despite turning to Russell Martin over the summer, the Saints do have the feel of a squad seeking s much-needed boost. Heading into September’s international break with what was an infamous 5-0 drumming at the hands of Sunderland, the former Swansea boss saw his squad put in another nightmare performance last time out. Marking their return from the fortnight interval with a woeful 4-1 drumming at home against Leicester, Southampton have remarkably shipped nine strikes in their back-to-back Championship defeats. Coming under real scrutiny over the past couple of weekends, Martin will have a mounting headache over his side’s rather glaring defensive issues. Including a spectacular 4-4 stalemate against Norwich back on August 12th, Tuesday’s hosts have conceded 18 goals in just their last six appearances across all competitions.
As for the visitors, while Ipswich might have only made their Championship return this season, the Blues are in the midst of a record-breaking flurry. Only continuing to gain a string of praise under Keiran McKenna, the mood around Portman Road remains at a red-hot high. Marking their return from September’s international break over the weekend with a gritty 1-0 victory away at Sheffield Wednesday, the former Manchester United coach will be calling on his high-flying squad to lay down another marker here. Arriving at St, Mary’s in midweek after winning five of their opening six Championship showdowns, it is no secret that Ipswich have their sights set on mounting another famous promotion charge. Extending on their EFL Cup adventure away at League One outfit Reading last month, McKenna’s men have continued to shine with their performances outside of East Anglia. In fact, winning each of their four away fixtures so far this season, we are backing an away double chance on Tuesday night.
