Competition: Premier League
Market: Newcastle win
Odds: 20/21 @ 888sport
Looking to make another statement on Sunday afternoon, Newcastle will make the trip to St. Mary’s when they meet Southampton.
Starting with the hosts, while Southampton might have clung to a 1-1 draw against Arsenal on October 23rd, it appears that was just a minor boost for the Saints. Last seen putting in another toothless display as they were hit with a 1-0 loss away at Crystal Palace, there still remains plenty of pressure on Ralph Hasenhuttl’s shoulders. Battling it out at the foot of the Premier League table and with many around St. Mary’s fearing their side could be at the heart of a real relegation scrap, the one-time RB Leipzig boss has seen his side record just a single victory from any of their previous eight outings. With that nightmare run of form stemming all the way back to the end of August, Southampton should also be worried by their most recent meeting against Sunday’s guests. When Hasenhuttl’s side welcomed Newcastle to St. Mary’s last season, they were hit with a 2-1 loss.
As for the visitors, although Southampton might be enduring another downbeat run, the same cannot be said for a high-flying Newcastle. Last seen putting in a rampant display as they picked up a 4-0 romp at home against Aston Villa, Eddie Howe’s side find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Only continuing on what has been a remarkable purple patch since opening the 2022/23 campaign, the ex-Bournemouth boss has seen his side lose just one of their opening 13 Premier League matchups. Opening this weekend’s fixtures sat fourth in the table, many feel that Howe’s side can secure a European finish this season. Likewise, taking 16 points from just their last six top-flight outings, Newcastle will be looking to lay down another marker here. Claiming a 2-1 win when they last made the trip to the south coast back on March 10th, we’re backing a similar outcome here.
