In what could prove to be an action-packed MLS showdown in the early hours of Sunday, Sporting KC will welcome Seattle to Children’s Mercy Park.

Starting with the hosts, while Sporting KC might have opened up the 2024 campaign with their sights firmly set on securing another play-off ticket, Peter Vermes’ men are in the midst of a major MLS nightmare. Last seen putting in another worrying performance as they slumped to a 3-1 drumming away at Minnesota, the Wizards sit rock-bottom of the Western Conference table and they have come under plenty of recent scrutiny. Signing off May with another 2-1 loss at home against Vancouver, Sporting have now lost all of their previous seven MLS appearances on the bounce. Likewise, failing to collect a single victory against top-flight opposition since a 3-1 win against Toronto on March 30th, Vermes’ side have also continued to show a string of glaring defensive issues. Shipping 15 goals on their seven-match losing run, Sunday’s hosts have also failed to muster a single MLS clean sheet over the past three months.

As for the visitors, while Seattle might have opened up the 2024 campaign in the midst of their own extended rut, the Sounders have come roaring back. Although Brian Schmetzer’s men might have suffered last-gasp heartbreak at home against Real Salt Lake last weekend as they eventually had to settle for a 1-1 stalemate at Lumen Field, the Greens have suffered just a single defeat from any of their previous nine appearances across all formats. With that flurry stemming back to a 2-1 defeat against DC United on April 28th, Seattle could be smelling the chance to break into the play-off places here. Appearing to have turned a recent corner, the Sounders will also be excited by their recent success outside of Washington. Last seen on their travels claiming a 2-1 win against St. Louis City, Schmetzer’s side have won three of their previous four showdowns away from Lumen Field.
