Marking their return from September’s international break this weekend, Lille will travel to the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard when they meet a struggling St. Etienne on Friday night.
Starting with the hosts, while St. Etienne might have secured a Ligue 1 return for this season, the Greens have a real uphill battle on their hands this time around. Heading into the fortnight interval with a nightmare display as they slumped to a 4-0 drumming against Brest, Friday’s hosts have lost each of their first three Ligue 1 showdowns by an aggregate score of 7-0. Continuing to show a string of glaring issues at both ends of the pitch, St. Etienne should have another real challenge on their hands at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
As for the visitors, heading into September’s international break with a 3-1 defeat at home against defending champions PSG, Lille will be looking to mark their return from the fortnight interval with an immediate boost. Officially booking their Champions League group stage ticket last month as they secured a thrilling 3-2 aggregate victory against Slavia Prague, Bruno Genesio’s men should be smelling a real opportunity on Friday night. Opening proceedings with an impressive 2-0 win away at Reims on August 20th, it should be highlighted that the Mastiffs have won each of their last three Ligue 1 showdowns away from the Stade Pierre-Mauroy continuing on from last season. Likewise, suffering just a single domestic defeat on their travels since the end of February, Lille should also be excited by an eye-catching record against Friday’s hosts. In fact, Genesio’s side are unbeaten in all of their previous seven showdowns against St. Etienne across all competitions – a run that stems back to May 2018.
