In what is rightfully billed as a season-defining showdown on Wednesday night, St. Johnstone will welcome Ross County to McDiarmid Park.
Starting with the hosts, while St. Johnstone might have claimed a crucial 2-1 victory away at Hibernian last month, it appears that was nothing more than a minor boost for Craig Levin’s struggling squad. Opening Wednesday’s showdown at McDiarmid Park sat two points adrift in the relegation play-off spot, the former Hearts boss has come under some mounting scrutiny. Last seen over the weekend suffering a second-half collapse away at Ross County as they eventually fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Livingston, the Saints have now lost all of their previous four Premiership appearances by an aggregate score of 8-2. Likewise, the Perth-based outfit have lost six of their last seven top-flight battles and they have continued on a nightmare rut on home soil. Including a 3-1 loss against Hibernian on April 27th, St. Johnstone have remarkably failed to win any of their last eight consecutive battles at McDiarmid Park – a rut that stems all the way back to December 16th.
As for the visitors, making an immediate return to losing ways over the weekend as they suffered an infamous 5-1 drumming at home against Motherwell, Ross County are in the midst of their own public struggle. Holding just a two-point buffer over St. Johnstone and slipping into the relegation play-off spot, the Staggies have lost four of their previous six Premiership appearances and they are bracing themselves for a season-defining trip to Perth on Wednesday night. However, despite opening May with a 2-1 victory at home against Hibernian, interim boss Don Cowie will have a major headache over his side’s glaring struggles away from Victoria Park. In fact, last seen on their travels falling to a 2-0 defeat against Livingston, Ross County have lost all of their previous seven straight showdowns on the road by an aggregate score of 17-2. Likewise, it should also be noted that the Staggies have failed to muster a single Premiership clean sheet on their travels since way back on October 24th.
