Competition: MLS
Market: Both teams to score
Odds: 4/7 @ Pribet
In a showdown that could see chances fall at both ends of the pitch, St. Louis City will welcome Portland to Missouri in the early hours of Sunday.
Starting with the hosts, while St. Louis might have made real history last season as they were crowned Western Conference champions, Bradley Carnell’s men have come crashing back down to earth this time around. Although the Reds might have secured a much-welcomed 3-1 victory against Chicago last month, that is the only win that they have collected from any of their previous seven MLS appearances. Suffering last-gasp heartbreak away at Inter Miami last weekend as they eventually had to settle for an action-packed 3-3 stalemate, the Missouri-based outfit have registered just a single win from any of their previous four top-flight battles. Signing off May with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Seattle, Sunday’s hosts will be concerned by their glaring defensive struggles. Including a 3-1 loss against Cincinnati on May 19th, St. Louis have shipped 10 goals on their four-match losing run. However, it should be noted, Carnell’s side have seen four of their last five outings finish with both teams finding the net.
As for the visitors, although Portland might have opened up the 2024 campaign in the midst of a real struggle, it appears that the Timbers have turned a recent corner. Although Phil Neville’s men might have been last seen playing out a frantic 2-2 stalemate at home against Houston, the one-time Manchester United defender has seen his squad muster seven points from their previous three MLS appearances. Likewise, signing off May with a 2-1 win at home against Sporting KC, the Oregon-based outfit have also suffered just a single defeat from any of their last five outings. Finding a route into the play-off places, Nevill’s side will now be hoping to find some welcomed defensive stability. In fact, Sunday’s guests have managed to muster just a single MLS clean sheet from any of their 17 top-flight appearances since opening up the 2024 campaign. In what could prove to be an enjoyable affair here, we are backing both teams to get on the scoresheet this weekend.
