Hoping to find a route back into the automatic promotion places on Saturday lunchtime, Southampton will travel to the Liberty when they meet Swansea.
Starting with the hosts, although Swansea might find themselves in the midst of a four-match unbeaten run across all competitions, Luke Williams’ men have continued to struggle with their consistency this season. While the south Welsh outfit might have opened up the 2023/24 campaign with their sights set on mounting a genuine play-off charge, they almost find themselves sat in second-tier limbo. Last seen suffering last-gasp heartbreak away at Birmingham as they eventually had to settle for a 2-2 stalemate, Swansea have failed to collect back-to-back Championship victories since the start of October. Already sat five points adrift of breaking into the top-half, Saturday’s hosts should at least be excited by their recent success at the Liberty. Extending on their FA Cup adventure on January 6th as they secured a routine 2-0 win against League Two outfit Morecambe, Williams’ men have won all of their previous three straight showdowns in front of their own supporters by an aggregate score of 5-2.
As for the visitors, while Southampton might have lost their Premier League status last season, Russell Martin’s men have their sights set on securing an immediate top-flight return. Last seen putting in another rampant display as they stormed to a 4-0 romp at home against Sheffield Wednesday, the former Swansea boss will be looking to get one over on his former employers here. Firing on all cylinders and opening Saturday’s showdown in south Wales sat just three points adrift of breaking back into the automatic promotion spots, the Saints are remarkably unbeaten in all of their last 20 straight appearances across all competitions – a purple patch that stems all the way back to September 23rd. Smelling a potential opportunity this weekend, Southampton will also be hugely excited by their most recent showdown against Saturday’s hosts. Storming to a stunning 5-0 victory when they welcomed Swansea to St. Mary’s on Boxing Day, Martin will be calling on a repeat performance here.
