Market: Sydney FC win

Looking to sign off their A-League campaign with a flurry on home soil, Sydney will welcome Newcastle to the Allianz Stadium on Saturday morning.

Starting with the hosts, while Sydney might have found themselves enduring an A-League blip prior to March’s international break, Steve Corica’s side have come roaring back in some style. Last seen putting in another professional display as they claimed a 2-0 victory away at Brisbane, the Sky Blues have secured back-to-back top-flight wins for the first time since the start of February. Unbeaten in each of their last four A-League appearances and storming their way to a stellar 4-1 romp against Perth on April 15th, the former champions have found a real clinical edge in the final third. Notching 10 strikes on their four-match unbeaten run, Sydney should be smelling the chance to sign off their regular-season run with another flurry at the Allianz. It should also be noted, when the Sky Blues traveled to Newcastle back on New Year’s Eve, they claimed a deserved 2-0 win. Already clinching a top-six return, Corica’s men are rightfully tipped as a standout pick here.

As for the visitors, making an immediate return to losing ways last weekend as they slumped to a 3-1 drumming at home against the Central Coast Mariners, Newcastle are ending their A-League campaign in the midst of a real struggle. Despite claiming a much-needed 2-1 win against Macarthur on April 14th, that is remarkably the only A-League win that the Jets have claimed from their previous eight appearances – a run that stems all the way back to February 17th. With their nightmare spell underlined by a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brisbane earlier in the month, Newcastle have also claimed just a sole away victory since opening 2023. Slumping to that 2-0 defeat when they welcomed Sydney to the McDonald Jones Stadium on New Year’s Eve, Arthur Papas’ side will face another huge challenge here. Given the recent gulf in class between Saturday’s opponents, we are backing a home victory this weekend.
