Bitesize Prediction: Union Berlin vs Royale Union – 09/03/23

Competition: Europa League

Market: Union Berlin win

Odds: 4/6 @ 888sport

Looking to pick up a first-leg advantage on Thursday evening when they turn their attention back to Europa League duties, Union Berlin will host Royale Union.

Starting with the hosts, while Union Berlin might be in the midst of what has been a recent inconsistent spell, the mood in Urs Fischer’s camp should be at a continued high. Although Die Eisernen might have won just one of their previous five matchups across all formats, the Kopenick-based outfit did claim a major European scalp last month. Eventually coming past Dutch icons Ajax on February 23rd thanks to a 3-1 romp at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei, some have tipped Union as a potential Europa League dark horse in 2023. Remarkably suffering just a single defeat since a 4-1 drumming at the hands of Freiburg back on November 13th, Thursday’s hosts have gained a fearsome reputation for their success on home soil. In fact, Fischer’s side have not suffered a single loss in front of their own supporters since the start of September.

As for the visitors, although Royale Union might have managed to make a much-needed return to winning ways over the weekend, it doesn’t cover what has been a largely downbeat run of form. Despite claiming a hard-fought 2-1 victory at home against Eupen a few days ago, that was the first win that Karel Geraerts’ side have picked up from their previous five matchups across all formats. With that run stemming back to February 5th, Les Unionistes have also shown some extended problems on the road. In fact, including an action-packed 4-2 loss against Westerlo last month, the Brussels-based outfit have claimed just one win away from the Joseph Marien Stadium since the start of January. Likewise, hit with a 1-0 defeat when they last met Union Berlin on Europa League duties last year, we are expecting a similar outcome here.

Bet: Union Berlin 4/6 to beat Royale Union in Thursday’s Europa League showdown @ 888sport
