Hoping to extend on their eye-catching start to the 2023/24 La Liga campaign, Valencia will welcome Osasuna to the Mestalla on Sunday evening.
Starting with the hosts, while Valencia might have found themselves at the heart of an infamous relegation scrap and dealing with a string of financial issues, the Bats have come roaring back since returning from the summer break. Opening up the 2023/24 campaign in the midst of a real flurry, Ruben Baraja’s men have clinched back-to-back La Liga victories from their opening two appearances. Getting proceedings underway with an eye-catching 2-1 victory away at reigning Europa League champions Sevilla, Los Ches were last seen putting in another rugged performance. Landing a 1-0 win at home against top-flight returners Las Palmas, Valencia will be desperate to make another statement here. Continuing on from last season, it should be highlighted that Sunday’s hosts have gained a reputation for their success at the Mestalla. On a run that is highlighted by a famous 1-0 win against Real Madrid on May 21st, the Bats have lost just one of their last nine La Liga showdowns in front of their own supporters.
As for the visitors, although Osasuna might have opened the new campaign with a deserved 2-0 victory against Celta Vigo on August 13th, Los Rojillos came crashing back down to earth last weekend. Eventually slumping to a 2-0 loss at home against Athletic Bilbao, it is no secret that Jagoba Arrasate’s men have their sights set on mounting another European charge this season. However, signing off the 2022/23 campaign by losing each of their final three La Liga showdowns away from the El Sadar, Osasuna should also be worried by a downbeat record against Sunday’s opponents. Including a 1-0 loss when they travelled to the Mestalla back on March 11th, Arrasate’s side suffered back-to-back losses against Valencia last season. It should be noted, with just a pair of their last seven meetings at the Mestalla finishing with both teams finding the net, we could be set for a low-scoring affair on Sunday evening.
