Hoping to widen their buffer in the play-off chase on Friday morning, Melbourne City will travel to the Sky Stadium when they meet Wellington.

Starting with the hosts, while Wellington might have secured a stellar A-League silver medal finish last season, the Phoenix have drastically struggled to replicate any form this time around. Putting in what was a nightmare performance last weekend as they slumped to a 6-1 drumming at the hands of title contenders Auckland, Giancarlo Italiano has plenty of pressure on his shoulders. Despite securing a crucial 2-1 win away at Macarthur last month, that is the only A-League victory that Wellington have collected from any of their previous eight consecutive outings. With that rut stemming back to a 2-1 win against Newcastle on December 28th, Friday’s hosts have also gained a reputation for their glaring struggles on home soil. Last seen at the Sky Stadium settling for a downbeat 1-1 stalemate against Brisbane, Italiano’s camp have recorded just a sole A-League victory in front of their own supporters since the end of November.

As for the visitors, although Melbourne might open Friday’s trip to the Sky Stadium scrapping it out in the play-off chase, Aurelio Vidmar’s men are desperately seeking some much-needed stability. Eventually forced to settle for a thrilling 2-2 draw away at arch-rivals Melbourne Victory last weekend, the Sky Blues have recorded just a single win from any of their previous five A-League showdowns. Likewise, hit with a 3-0 loss at the hands of Auckland last month, the former Adelaide boss will have a real headache over his side’s extended issues on the road. In fact, the Australian giants have failed win any of their previous six straight showdowns away from AAMI Park – a run that stems back to a 4-1 victory against Brisbane on December 6th. However, landing a 2-0 win when they welcomed Wellington to AAMI Park on January 3rd, Melbourne do hold a dominant record against Friday’s hosts. In fact, Vidmar’s side have won five of their previous six A-League battles.

Bet: Both teams to score at Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne City 10/11 for Friday’s A-League battle @ 1xBet
