Competition: A-League
Market: Both teams to score
Odds: 7/10 @ Pribet
Two sides firmly scrapping it out at the top of the A-League table, Wellington Phoenix will welcome Melbourne Victory to the Sky Stadium on Friday morning.
Starting with the hosts, last seen opening April with a 2-1 loss away at Central Coast, Wellington will certainly be seeking an immediate response here. Continuing on what has been a hugely impressive A-League flurry this season, Giancarlo Italiano’s men are sat firmly in the driving seat to clinch a shock silver medal finish among Australia’s elite. In fact, the Yellow Army have lost just a pair of their previous 14 appearances – a run that stems all the way back to a 3-1 loss against Sydney on December 29th. Looking to take a giant step towards booking a famous AFC Champions League ticket, Wellington will also be excited to make a return to home soil here. Including an action-packed 3-2 victory against Adelaide last month, Friday’s hosts have won all of their previous four contests at the Sky Stadium by an aggregate score of 8-3. It’s also worth noting that Italiano’s side have suffered just a single defeat in front of their own supporters over the past 12 months.
As for the visitors, although Melbourne might have endured a public A-League nightmare last season, the Victory have come roaring back this time around. Last seen putting in a stellar performance at AAMI Park as they secured a 2-1 victory against bitter local rivals Melbourne City, Tony Popovic’s men should find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Signing off March with another 2-1 win against Perth, the one-time Crystal Palace coach has seen his squad muster 10 points from their previous four A-League appearances. Skyrocketing themselves into the play-off places, Friday’s guests will be desperate to make another statement here. However, facing what will be a stern challenge this weekend, Popovic’s side have struggled to find much stability on the road. Including an action-packed 3-2 defeat against Brisbane on March 3rd, Melbourne have won just one of their last seven showdowns away from AAMI Park. With all of the last five meetings between Friday’s opponents finishing with both teams finding the net, we are expecting a similar outcome here.
