In what could prove to be an action-packed Bundesliga showdown this weekend, Wolfsburg will welcome Stuttgart to the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Starting with the hosts, while some in Wolfsburg’s camp might have opened up the new campaign with their sights set on mounting a genuine European charge this time around, the Wolves have drastically struggled to find any kind of stability. With it already suggested that Ralph Hasenhuttl already has mounting pressure on his shoulders, the former Southampton boss is desperately seeking a much-needed boost. Eventually falling to what was a remarkable 4-3 loss away at defending champions Bayer Leverkusen last weekend, the Greens have lost three of their first four Bundesliga appearances so far this season. Marking their return from September’s international break with a worrying 2-1 defeat at home against Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolfsburg have continued to show some glaring defensive issues. Including an action-packed 3-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich on the opening weekend, Hasenhuttl’s side have already shipped nine Bundesliga goals from their first four outings.
As for the visitors, while Stuttgart might have opened their famous Champions League adventure with a 3-1 loss away at Spanish icons Real Madrid, Die Roten certainly came roaring back in some style last week. Putting in what was a sensational performance at the MHPArena as they stormed their way to a 5-1 romp against Borussia Dortmund, Sebastian Hoeneb’s men have certainly impressed since returning from September’s international break. Marking their return from the fortnight interval with a 3-1 victory away at Borussia Monchengladbach, the former Hoffenheim boss will be calling on his squad to make another statement here. However, opening the new campaign with a shock 3-1 loss against Freiburg on August 24th, Stuttgart are seeking some crucial defensive steel. Along with a pulsating 3-3 stalemate against Mainz last month, Saturday’s guests have failed to muster a single Bundesliga clean sheet so far this season and have also conceded eight top-flight strikes.
